Gour Ruins
Overview
Gour, once the capital of medieval Bengal, is a sprawling archaeological site in Malda dating back to the 12th–16th centuries. Located near the India-Bangladesh border, this site preserves the remnants of ancient mosques, gateways, and royal structures. It is significant for understanding the architectural and political grandeur of the Bengal Sultanate era.
Key Structures
- Dakhil Darwaza (Salute Gate): A magnificent brick gateway, once the main entrance to the fort. Its elaborate terracotta ornamentation is a hallmark of Sultanate architecture.
- Firoz Minar (Victory Tower): A five-storied tower, reminiscent of the Qutub Minar, built by Sultan Saifuddin Firoz Shah. It served as a minaret for calls to prayer and perhaps as a watchtower.
- Baroduari Mosque (Great Golden Mosque): One of the largest surviving mosques in Gour, featuring a sprawling prayer hall with eleven arched doorways. Its massive brick structure and once-gilded domes gave it its name.
- Qadam Rasul Mosque: Houses a revered black basalt stone impression of the Prophet Muhammad's footprint, making it a significant pilgrimage site.
- Lukochuri Darwaza (Hide-and-Seek Gate): An interesting gate near the royal palace, supposedly used by sultans for recreational activities.
