Overview
Churulia, a village tucked away near Asansol, is the birthplace of revolutionary Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Though humble in scale, it is of deep cultural and historical significance.

The Nazrul Academy Museum, run by locals, houses the poet’s belongings, handwritten poems, and photographs. The quiet surroundings amplify the emotion and patriotism that shaped Nazrul’s work.Churulia is the birthplace of eminent Bengali poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, and the resting place of his wife Pramila Devi. Many of the manuscripts, medallions and other belongings of the poet are preserved at Nazrul Academy in the village. Nearby, there is a college bearing the poet’s name. Nazrul Academy was established in 1958.It is believed that there was a fort at Churulia in olden days. It fell to Sher Khan, the Afghan chieftain in the 16th century. A mound in the village is believed to contain the ruins of the fort. During the Muslim rule a mosque was built at Churulia. It is a good example of Islamic architecture.
How to Reach
By Air: The Kazi Nazrul Islam airport is present within the district.
By Train: The district has two major Rail stations: Asansol Railway Station and Durgapur Railway Station.
By Road: The distance of Durgapur from the State Capital (Kolkata) is 173 Kms which is a 3 hours 45 minutes journey via NH19. Kolkata to Asansol is 213 Kms which is a 4 hours 35 minutes journey via NH19 and AH1.
