Where it is located: Located above Ghoom, this monastery is accessible via a scenic uphill trail from the Old Ghoom road, tucked within forest paths and misty surroundings.
A Sacred Trail to a Forgotten Sanctuary
Tashiding Gumpha, often confused with its namesake in Sikkim, is hidden above the touristy zones of Darjeeling, offering serenity that is increasingly rare. The trail to the monastery is part of the experience—lined with prayer flags, pine trees, and occasional stupas. Once you reach the monastery, you’re greeted by a humble structure with weathered walls, ancient prayer wheels, and a wooden hall used by meditating monks. The view from the hill offers an almost uninterrupted look over tea valleys and mountain ridges. Unlike popular sites, there’s no crowd, no noise—only the chants of nature and the rustle of flags in the wind. You’ll likely be the only visitor, stepping into a space that feels untouched by time. Tashiding is maintained by a small group of monks, and visitors are welcome to sit, observe, and respectfully explore the surroundings. It remains a spiritual retreat for those seeking introspection or cultural exploration.
