Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
Overview
What it is: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), fondly known as the Toy Train, is a narrow-gauge railway that climbs through the mountains, offering a historic and scenic experience.
When it was built: Construction began in 1879 and was completed in 1881 during the British colonial era to connect New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling.
Where it is located: The line runs from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to Darjeeling, with key heritage stations at Kurseong, Ghum, and Batasia Loop.
Tracks of Heritage: The Legacy of the Toy Train
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a marvel of 19th-century engineering. The Toy Train uses a 2 ft narrow gauge track, maneuvering sharp curves, steep climbs, and lush mountain passes.
The most famous stretch is between Kurseong and Darjeeling, featuring:
- Batasia Loop: A spiraled track section with panoramic views and a war memorial.
- Ghum Station: At 2,258 meters, it is the highest railway station in India.
- Steam Engine Locomotives: Some rides still use restored vintage engines.
Built to serve both military and leisure purposes, the railway helped turn Darjeeling into a premier hill station during the British Raj. Today, it remains a living symbol of colonial transportation, blending heritage tourism with scenic travel. The stations themselves have retained their British-era charm, with wooden signboards, antique benches, and ticket booths that feel frozen in time.
