A Festival That Sings the Soul of the Dooars

Bhawaiya Utsav is more than just a musical gathering—it’s a celebration of oral heritage. Originating among bullock cart drivers and rural communities of North Bengal and Assam, Bhawaiya songs express longing, separation, and pastoral life. The festival brings together folk singers, instrumentalists, and storytellers from across Bengal and the northeast, reviving a genre once sung by the riverbanks and forest paths. Accompanied by instruments like the dotara and flute, these melancholic yet melodious songs are performed live, often with theatrical elements and folk dance. Stalls offering local crafts, ethnic food, and folk literature also enrich the cultural atmosphere, turning it into a full-fledged heritage experience.
