Totopara

Overview

What it is: Totopara is a small, isolated tribal village inhabited primarily by the Toto tribe, one of the smallest and most endangered tribal communities in India.

When to Visit: Best visited during the post-monsoon and winter months (October to February) when weather is pleasant and village activities are vibrant.

Where it is: Located at the foothills of the Himalayas near the Bhutan border, approximately 40 km from Alipurduar town inside the foothills of the Buxa Tiger Reserve.

Totopara is a living repository of the Toto tribe’s rich cultural heritage and customs. The Totopara community is known for its distinctive language, unique bamboo houses with thatched roofs, and traditional attire.

Visitors witness an unspoiled way of life with:

  • Handicrafts woven from bamboo and cane,
  • Simple agriculture and fishing livelihoods,
  • Community rituals, folk songs, and dances unique to the Toto tribe.

Because of its isolation, Totopara has retained much of its traditional social structure and beliefs without much outside influence. The village is gradually opening up to eco-tourism under careful supervision to preserve its delicate culture.

How to Reach

By Air If you are traveling by air, then Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri will be the nearest airport.

By Train If you are traveling by rail, then you have to get down at Falakata/ Alipurduar Jn/ New Alipurduar Station.

By Road You can also reach Totopara from Siliguri, Cooch Behar, Falakata and Alipurduar.
