Sonajhuri Haat

Overview

Sonajhuri Haat, also known as Khoai Mela or Shanibarer Haat (Saturday Fair), is a vibrant open-air market located near Santiniketan in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. More than just a market, it's a living celebration of Bengal’s rural art, music, and traditions, set in the uniquely scenic Khoai region—famous for its red laterite soil and the meandering Kopai River.

The term “Sonajhuri” refers to the golden blossoms of Sonajhuri trees that adorn the area, especially in winter, creating a picturesque landscape. The haat began over two decades ago as a grassroots initiative to empower tribal artisans and craftspeople and has since evolved into a major cultural attraction.

What makes it special is the raw, earthy experience—vendors sit on the red earth under trees, offering handmade goods, as Baul singers and Santhali dancers fill the air with music and rhythm, all echoing Rabindranath Tagore’s vision for rural and cultural harmony.
