West Medinipur

West Medinipur, formed in 2002 from the bifurcation of the former Midnapore district, is located in the southwestern part of West Bengal. Midnapore town serves as its administrative headquarters. The district's landscape varies, featuring undulating terrain and forests in the west, which are part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, gradually transitioning to fertile alluvial plains in the east. It is the second-largest district in West Bengal by area and is known for having a significant number of villages.

The economy of West Medinipur is primarily driven by agriculture, with rice being the principal crop. Other important agricultural products include mulberry, mango, guava, lemon, cashew, banana, and jackfruit. The district also has a notable forest cover, contributing to its natural resources. While not as industrialized as some other districts, it has some presence in small-scale industries and handicrafts. The GDP of the district is reported to be 12 billion USD (as of May 2025).

Culturally, West Medinipur has a rich heritage, influenced by both tribal and non-tribal communities. The district is known for its folk art, including the ancient Patachitra scroll paintings, particularly from the village of Naya in the Pingla block, where most households are engaged in this art form. Other notable crafts include Madur (mat) weaving and Dokra art. Various festivals are celebrated, reflecting the diverse cultural tapestry of the region. The tribal communities, such as the Santals, Bhumij, and Lodhas, have their unique traditions, including dances and music associated with festivals like Baha, Sohorai, and Karam Puja. The district also has several temples and historical sites, attracting local tourists and pilgrims.
